How to make Chana Daal Halwa

It definitely takes some time to make Chana dal Halwa but its aroma and taste after it is made will make you enjoy eating it. Though it is time consuming, it was fun!

Step 1: Soaking the chana daal(split chickpea)

To make chana daal halwa, we first have to wash chana daal well in water and leave it to soak in clean water for 3 to 4 hours or if you want you can keep it overnight as well. The advantage of soaking chana daal in water is that it will become a little soft and will cook quickly.

Step 2: Cooking the Chana Daal

Now after taking out the soaked chana daal from the water we will pressure cook it. After cooking it till 2 to 3 whistles we will add some milk or water along with the chana daal. We will add so much that the chana daal gets submerged in it, we do not have to dip it completely. If you are cooking in a pan then cook for at least 15 minutes so that the chana daal does not become soft but the dal remains intact. In the pan we will initially cook it on high flame, when it comes to a boil then we will reduce it to low to medium and cookit on low flame . If even after 15 minutes there is milk or water left then there is no problem, we will use this water or milk in the grinding process of lentils.

Step 3: Grinding of Cooked Chana Daal

When we cook chana daal in milk or water, then after that we will cool it a little under the fan and grind it in the grinder but we will let it remain a little sharp so that at the time of eating it, the chana daal halwa will give a little nutty flavor.

Step 4: Preparing the Halwa Base

Now we will fry the grinded chana daal well in ghee, for which first of all we will take a heavy bottom pan so that our chana daal halwa does not burn, then we will add ghee in it. Now let the ghee become a little hot, not too hot, then we will add grinded chana daal in it and fry till the ghee gets separated and the colour of the chana daal starts turning brown. At this stage a very good aroma starts coming from the chana daal.

Step 5: Roasting Dry Fruits and Khoya in Ghee

Now we will put some ghee in another pan, then add chopped dry fruits in it and roast it lightly. Then in the same pan add some more ghee and fry the khoya lightly too.

Step 6: Preparing the Halwa sugar Syrup(chashni)

Now take a pan and add one spoon of desi ghee in it. When the ghee becomes a little hot, then add 4 to 5 pinches of green cardamom to it, then add sugar to it, then add water; as much water as there was sugar, that is half litre of water, then cook it on high flame till it comes to a boil, then reduce the flame to medium. Cook the chashni till it becomes two to three threads. This procedure takes at least 10 to 15 minutes approximately.

Step 7: Adding Dryfruits and Roasted Chana Daal into Sugar syrup

Now we will add roasted chana daal, koya and dry fruits in the prepared syrup and keep sautéing on high flame for at least 5 minutes. At this point we will add saffron strands and cardamom powder in it.

Step 8: Shaping It Into Barfi Shape

Now pour the above mixture into plate greased with ghee and spread it evenly .with the help of knife or any sharp object shape it into barfi shape at this point we have to very quick otherwise the chana daal mixture gets hardened then it will be very difficult. for us to shape it.let it cool on room temp.

Step 9: Serve and Enjoy!

When the above chana daal barfi gets cooled down then serve it and enjoy with your family and friends. You can make this chana dal halwa ki barfi anytime and enjoy it. If you want to get more benefits from it then try making it in the winter season.
